The Nihilist Rainbow blanket club (and some cool patterns, too)

So, I’ve decided to start a blanket club. (You can sign up at the link here.)

The theme is a nihilist rainbow of bright, eye popping shades guaranteed to brighten even the dullest day. You get to choose from DK, aran/worsted, or chunky weights, all in a 100% superwash merino wool. (I’ll be making mine in chunky, because I am 100% a product maker, not a process maker.)

The image here is a rough, vague idea of colour inspiration. It will be designed to flow easily from one month to the next, no weird ill-suited shades of yarn. Some will be semi solid, some will be variegated, some speckled. You’ll get 2 different colourways each month. (Sign up before January 20 to get the full year!)

Some have asked if this is a KAL/CAL. It is not, BUT: here are some pattern inspiration ideas, and I’ll share the one I’ve chosen at the bottom. Keep in mind that you’ll have a total of 2400g of yarn when everything is said and done, and most of these are chosen in a way that you could continue to add to them if you had extra yarn.

Knitting:

I know this is technically 4-ply, but hear me out: knit it with larger needles for a bigger blanket. I have a few friends making this one, and it has stirred a great envy within me. If I was going to knit my blanket, it might be this one. (Buy the pattern on Ravelry)

Another 4-ply that could use larger needles and heavier yarn is this fan favourite. I like the idea of a huge mountain of hexipuffs! Fill them with something else and make a weighted blanket! (Buy the pattern on Ravelry)

Actually sized for DK weight yarn, this geometric pattern is also pretty tempting. To make it larger, you’d just keep adding garter stitch hexagons. Then you could snap up some yarn for the border, if you wanted. (Buy the pattern on Ravelry)

Crochet:

For this blanket, you could just make half your monthly hexis with one of the colours on the inside, and half the other. Sew together as you go, or leave until the end, it’s your decision! (Free Ravelry download)

This is tempting me, I won’t lie. Crochet, portable, and seam as you go? Wicked. Also not as many ends as multicolour grannies! (Free Ravelry download)

This was a CAL last year, designed by Lucy of Attic 24. Something like this would work well for this club, and it might be what I end up doing because I cannot be bothered with sewing bits together. For this I would carry on in one colour, and then the other until I ran out. Next month, same deal, until I had a big obnoxiously rainbow blanket. (free pattern)

Make sure you sign up to the Nihilist Rainbow blanket club by January 20th to get all 12 months of yarns!
