New Adventure Time sparkle yarns

Adventure Time themed hand dyed sparkle yarns

Yup, you heard me.
ADVENTURE TIME.
SPARKLE YARNS.
I teased this release a few weeks ago with this sneaky peeky of the new sparkle stock:

Many thought the new theme would be retro games because of the way I put the video together: while that might be a future theme, I was just playing around with newly learned video editing skills and an add-on pack for the software I use.
I chose Adventure Time because it has a special place in my heart. I struggle with anxiety on a daily basis, and there’s not much that can quiet the noise these days. Political unrest, uncertainty about what’s going to happen to my residency visa, work stresses, etc, it goes on and on. I’ve gained enough control over my troll brain to quiet trivial worries, but when the worry is literally, “Can I keep living here,” it becomes a challenge to combat the monsters under the bed.
Some people say Adventure Time is just a stupid kids’ cartoon. Well, I don’t know, maybe they’re right about that – but in a world full of violence and anger, there’s only so much fictional murder and sexual assault I can stomach. (I just gave up on a book for this very reason.) This silly cartoon is like a bright spot that hits the nail on the head sometimes, and it reminds me I’m not the only one who thinks we’re living in a cruel, unfair world. The episode where Jake’s son buys the treehouse out from under him to try and force Jake to “get a real job” hits hard for a creative like me.
Anyway, I wanted to focus on the badass strong girls of this show. So, here we go:

Fionna the Human

Adventure Time themed hand dyed sparkle yarns: Fionna the Human
For those of you who haven’t seen the Ice King fanfiction episodes, I highly recommend them. Finn becomes Fionna, Jake the dog becomes Cake the cat, and we have our friend Marshall Lee (Marceline) too. They are hilarious and silly, and bring life to fanfiction the way we all wish we could. (In my fanfiction Firefly universe, Wash is…yeah. No spoilers but yeah.)

Vampire Queen

Adventure Time themed hand dyed sparkle yarn: Vampire Queen
Marceline is one of my fave characters: half demon, half vampire, and all rock and roll. She plays the bass, she writes songs, she has a complicated relationship with her father, and I’m sorry (not actually sorry), she’s totally into Princess Bubblegum.

Princess Bubblegum

Adventure Time themed hand dyed sparkle yarns: Princess Bubblegum
The other half of my OTP (one true pairing) is Princess Bubblegum, the benevolent ruler of the Candy Kingdom and genius scientist. She’s always in her lab experimenting and learning, and if the Sky Witch episode is any clue, she’s totally got some feels for Marceline. It’s canon, okay? You can’t ever take that away from me.

Lumpy Space Princess

Adventure Time themed hand dyed sparkle yarns: Lumpy Space Princess
Lumpy Space Princess is the funniest character, and has the confidence we should all aspire to have. She struggles with acceptance like we all do, but she knows she has some true friends. The episode where she and Marceline trash Breakfast Princess’ castle is one of my faves.

Lady Rainicorn

Adventure Time themed hand dyed sparkle yarns: Lady Rainicorn
My personal fave from this new collection is Lady Rainicorn, our fave rainbow unicorn with prismatic powers. If you haven’t seen the episode where Jake meets her parents, it’s a SCREAM.
For those who didn’t see it on Facebook (thanks social media algorithms), here’s the original full-length release video:

Each skein is £16, and a blend of 75% superwash merino, 20% nylon, and 5% sparkle. Perfect for socks or shawls! Head on over to The Shop to snag some.

Learning to sew for practical reasons

Turn jeans into cute shorts

The other day I read this article from Little Lamb Studios about finding a home in your body. I’ve been thinking about the craft/DIY community lately, and how a huge part of it is making things that no one wants to sell you anyway.
I’ve spent almost my whole life in a struggle with my weight and appearance, but I know that’s not a unique experience. Most women (and some men) experience body dysphoria at some point in their lives, or throughout their whole lives. While most people would now label me as average(ish), I was much heavier at various points in my life. Finding clothes was a nightmare (still is, but for different reasons), and learning to knit was a big step forward in making things that fit me properly, that didn’t cost an arm and a leg, and that didn’t look like mass-produced circus tents. I didn’t sew then, not really, but I did knit.

I moved to another country (four times), I changed my habits, I lost weight, my shape changed. (Note: I did not go on some crash diet with the intention of losing weight, I made slow, sustainable changes like eating healthier, drinking more water, and being active. Weight loss shouldn’t be the end goal, health should be. Don’t bounce into the comments here telling me about obesity as an epidemic etc etc because I assure you I’ve heard it all before and I am 500% not interested.) I still have trouble finding clothes, and a lot of that is rooted in practicality and identity.
I’ve never been comfortable in short shorts, and you know why?

CHUB. RUB.

I could go on some crash diet and lose 60 pounds, and I still wouldn’t have a thigh gap. It’s not how I’m built: I’m from the stock of farmers and pioneers, and I have LEGS. Those legs get hella angry when you subject them to high temperatures and friction. Ouch.
Whyyyy is finding knee length shorts SO IMPOSSIBLE? Yes, I’ve bought from the men’s section before, but men do not have hips. I have hips, wide ones, and by the time I find men’s shorts big enough for my hips, I could easily smuggle kilos of yarn in the legs of the shorts with all that extra room. It looks odd and unbalanced. It seems like women’s shorts are almost always waayyyy shorter than the men’s, and I’m just like,

CAN WE PLEASE GET VARIABLE INSEAM LENGTHS ON SHORTS PLEASE?

If you like short shorts, that’s awesome, truly. You do you! But I don’t want to spend my summer nursing heat rash thighs and walking like John Wayne.
And yes, I tried ordering online. I got sent IKEA short-overalls, with sewn closed buttonholes and nothing was attached. Tres bizarre, I know.

And then: a Pinterest idea, a sewing machine, a friend, and some old jeans.

I’m no stranger to turning jeans into shorts, but it usually involves sloppy hacking with old scissors out of heated desperation right around now, the third week in June. I wanted something else, something that wouldn’t fray or look like garbage.
I found this tutorial on Pinterest, and I had a EUREKA moment. That eureka moment was to ask Jess from my stitch & bitch group to help me, because I am a helpless baby bird who needs constant hand holding when it comes to sewing.
Jess brought her impressively huge Mama-Jama fancypants sewing machine, since mine is garbage and won’t hold tension, and sure af will not sew through denim.

ET VOILA!!

Turn jeans into cute shorts
With Jess’ help and guidance, I did an actual thing, and I didn’t mess it up! It’s like MAGIC. These shorts fit well (having been recommissioned from an old pair of jeans with fraying hems at the bottom), it let me use some of my animal print fabric that I got from Liberty last year, and it’s simple enough that I can probably attempt it again on my own with less hand holding and guidance.
I know it’s not A BIG DEAL, especially to experienced sewers, but it is to me! Seeing as I’m headed to Madrid next month, you can bet I’ll be hacking apart many pairs of jeans to be made into funky new shorts. Aw, yes.

Variegated yarn for a wedding shawl: hand dyed by GamerCrafting

I got an order a couple months back from a woman who requested to change the shipping address: she wanted me to send the yarn to her friend, who had promised to make her a wedding shawl. I asked her to send me photos, and she did!
Just. Look. At this gorgeous piece of artwork.

LOOK AT IT.
I’ll be honest with you all right now, lace patterns intimidate the hell out of me. It seems like my stitch counts always end up wrong, and if I put it down I have no idea what I’m doing when I pick it up again. Me + lace = disaster.
But not this knitter, known to her friends as Dobby and @Dobbyak on Instagram. Her lacework makes me want to cry tears of jealous joy (that’s totally a thing I just made up).
She used this pattern on Ravelry, for any interested parties.
Look at it again. LOOK.
Variegated hand dyed wedding shawl yarn
When I stopped to think about the true weight of this, I felt really humbled, and very small in the whole scope of the universe. Someone loved something I made SO MUCH that she had a friend dedicate hours of delicate knitting time to make something that she wore on one of the most important days of her life.
That’s….heavy. And crazy. And really, really cool.
I launched this series of yarn awhile back, after some interested people asked me to dye up more lace weight yarns. I went for a fun speckle on a fibre blend of linen, silk, and merino wool, and used a Disney Villains theme, because why not?
This shawl was made with 2 skeins of Maleficent:

Like I said, lace knitting intimidates me. So does lace weight yarn, for a matter of fact. So it’s very cool to see it knitted up, and very humbling to see someone wear it ON HER WEDDING DAY. It’s bananas.
Good bananas.

Beating Second Sock Syndrome

Beating second sock syndrome: Knitting two socks at a time without magic loop

…without knitting two socks on the same circular.
Listen, any sock knitter will tell you that the second sock is a pain in the ass. I already knit one sock, and now you want me to knit another one?
Pffffffff.
There are some seriously ingenious hacks and tips out there on beating second sock syndrome. Some people knit toe up, two at a time on the same circular! I did it once, but I had to watch the tutorial video a billion times to get it right. You may not know this about me, but my spatial intelligence leaves a lot to be desired.

Beating second sock syndrome with toe up, two at a time and magic loop: solution 1

Here’s the tutorial for the spatially intelligent among you:

This tutorial from Very Pink Knits is excellent for those who are all about toe up, two at a time socks on a magic loop.
Here are my qualms about this method:

  1. I suck at it, and can never quite remember the cast on without watching the video a few times, which makes it a bad choice for on the go knitting for me.
  2. Sometimes, I want to knit cuff down, because I’m a perfectionist with a problem, and that problem is toe up socks and the cast off cuff that never looks quite as even as I’d like it to.
  3. I lost my 2.5mm long circulars in the couch last month, and I’m 96.2% sure the couch ate them.

That being said, I also suffer from Second Sock Syndrome. I am an impatient human with a limited attention span, and knitting the same thing twice has never really appealed to me. I went out searching for a solution.

Solution 2: never knit the same sock twice

I know a fabulous woman named Valerie, and she never knits the same sock twice. She knits a whole bunch of mismatched socks, and at Christmas her family gets to draw two random socks out of a paper bag. In a lot of ways, Val is my hero. She’s also a beekeeper, which is possibly the coolest thing ever.
While I tend to wear mismatched socks anyway, this doesn’t help me when I’m designing socks. Magazines, publishing houses, and knitters generally want to see both socks in a photo, right? So I had to find another idea.

Solution 3: knit socks concurrently

Another fabulous human is Claire, a.k.a SquealsOverYarn on Ravelry. She’s in my stitch and bitch group, and she gave me an amazing idea:
She always knits socks concurrently. Knits one toe, then the other. Then the foot for both, the gusset for both, the heel, and so on.
Obviously this means you need two sets of needles, be they DPNs or circulars for magic loop, but I’m always looking for a reason to buy more needles anyway, so this was perfect for me. (I like these bamboo ones, they are good quality and cheap af. This is an affiliate link just so’s ya know.)
Usually I knit that first sock and the second has to wait awhile. But with Claire’s method, I’m already halfway through BOTH socks, and about to turn the heels. I could very well finish the pair in the next couple of days! MAGIC!
Anyway stay tuned for more exiting BOOK news and some awesome kits and gradient sets that are currently on the way. Yaaaaaasssss.
(Looking for the Etsy shop? It’s here. Also if you pin three things and send me the links on your Pinterest, you’ll get free shipping. I’m just sayin’, that’s a sweet deal.)

Exciting news for GamerCrafting

Exciting news for GamerCrafting

First off, if you didn’t see last week’s Alien themed yarn launch, check it out. It’s awesome. My wife and I went to see the Alien movie yesterday, and it’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Seriously. I know we’re Alien franchise superfans, but I’m loving how they answered some questions that Prometheus left behind. (I didn’t love some other stuff, but hey, I’m not about to ruin your day with spoilers!)
Now, for some exciting news:

GamerCrafting yarns will be at THREE yarn shows this year! That three more than last year, which was zero!
I won’t lie to you: getting rejected from many yarn shows can be disappointing and disheartening. You dye yarns, you work hard, but sometimes more established and talented dyers get those very coveted spots.
So, where can you find GamerCrafting yarns this year?
On September 10th, you’ll find me at the Perth Festival of Yarn in Scotland! It’s a one day event, but I’m absolutely thrilled to be taking part and there’s lots of buzz around for this yarny festival. Click here for tickets, and here to check out their Facebook page.

“But Angie, I can’t make it to Scotland in September. 🙁 “

Then how about heading up to Yarndale on the 23/24 of September?? Because I’ll be there too! I’m absolutely over the moon to be taking part, and you’ll definitely have a blast if you go. Click here for tickets, and here for their Facebook.
Not only will you find the hand dyed yarns at these shows, and the geeky stitch markers, but you’ll also find BRAND NEW WORLD RELEASES of some patterns, kits, and new fun knitting and crochet tools and accessories. It’s going to be  A BUSY SUMMER, guys.
I can’t announce the final show quite yet, but it will be later in the year, that’s all I can say!

Brand new Alien themed hand dyed yarn

Y’all, I’ve been teasing you about it for WEEKS, but it’s finally here!! Four brand new shades on a brand new yarn base: 100% merino wool, lace weight yarn.
Why Alien? Because I am obsessed with the Alien franchise, and Ellen Ripley is a supreme badass. Did you know that the script was written to be non-gendered, except for Ripley? Yeah, that’s right, Ripley was supposed to be a man. But then our queen Sigourney Weaver showed up and made history. (Side note: science fiction was totally invented by a woman, thanks Mary Shelley!)
So here you have it: four new shades released today in the GamerCrafting Etsy shop. Alien themed hand dyed yarn
This is Faded Stompers, a light pink, grey, and white shade. Because Ripley’s iconic alien stomper shoes would totally be faded now, after stomping all those xenomorphs. Snag a skein!
alien themed hand dyed yarn
And this is Alien Blood, representative of the caustic blood that xenomorphs have. Can eat through ships, metal, shields, and flesh. Yum yum! Snag a skein!
Alien themed hand dyed yarn
And this is LV 426, the planet where the whole franchise began. As Rick says in Rick and Morty, distress calls are dead aliens and free stuff 9 times out of 10, but sometimes it’s a trap. If only they’d have listened to Ripley, am I right? Stash attack!
Alien themed hand dyed yarn
Here’s my personal favorite from this collection: “Weyland-Yutani!” After all, none of the characters would even be in that mess without The Company being desperate to capture a xenomorph for nefarious reasons. Yellow, black, white, and grey, just like the logo! Snag a skein!
All of these yarns are 100g skeins of lace weight, 100% merino wool yarn that have been hand-dyed. They should be hand washed, as they are not superwash!
Have you seen the new shop announcement on Etsy? Pin any three things direct from the GamerCrafting shop, send me the links to the pins, and you’ll get FREE SHIPPING. That’s right, free. All you have to do is pin.
Stay tuned for new Marvel MCU yarns, new organic bases, new cottons, and coming up later this summer, KITS!

The GamerCrafting yarn origin story

GamerCrafting yarns origin story

This week’s #YarnLoveChallenge theme is beginnings or tutorials. Y’all know where you can find my patterns (Ravelry, LoveKnitting), so I thought I’d talk about why it is that I do. For this exercise, I’ll be interviewing myself for the GamerCrafting yarns origin story. You’re welcome.
Me: Angie, when did you know that you wanted to dye yarn?
Also me: Well, me, I was putting together a tutorial on DIY yarn dye for LoveKnitting. I was using fun stuff like Kool-Aid and food coloring to dye yarn to show people how easy it was to have a little bit of fun with it on a rainy afternoon. And then I got bitten by the dye bug, invested in proper equipment and dyes, and started up an Etsy shop. It’s still growing, but I’m always THRILLED when someone uses my yarn or I see it in the wild on social media!
Me: And why geeky themes?
Also me: Why NOT geeky themes? Many people use awesome things in their world as inspiration, like landscapes, literature, or butterflies. To me, video games are their own art form, so I figured there would be plenty of inspiration on offer.
I could probably squawk about how important video games are becoming as a media medium but I don’t want to bore all of our lovely readers to tears. To put it short, the advent of Steam as a platform as allowed smaller independent developers to create a hugely wide variety of games that target a much more diverse audience than continual Call of Duty releases.
Me: Call of Duty: ZOMBIES!
Also me: Ha! Exactly! You’re so funny, me!
GamerCrafting yarns origin story
Me: So what’s next for GamerCrafting?
Also me: Well, aside from THE BOOK, which will hopefully be released sometime in the autumn (late September/mid October), I spent yesterday planning out all of my spring and summer yarn dyes and releases to coincide with some AWESOME stuff happening this summer in geekworld. Let’s just say some of these yarns will be BLOCKBUSTERS (as much as a yarn can be).
If THE BOOK isn’t a huge disaster that makes me hide in a cave for 30 years, then maybe another book in the future? More yarns, new yarn bases, more vegan options, new dye techniques, and please for the love of god a bigger space so I can dry more yarn at one time.
Me: Exciting! Terrifying?
Also me: Yeah, yup. Both of those. For sure.
Anyway, READERS, I’m now on TUMBLR. If that’s your thing come join me for wanderlust, knitting, yarnporn, and endless fangirling. Current obsession: Witcher 3 (yes I know it came out 2 years ago).

Disney Villains hand dyed yarns!

Disney Villains hand dyed yarns

So I released these new Disney villains hand dyed yarns last week, but I never actually wrote why they are Disney Villain themed.

To put it bluntly, it’s because the Villains are by far the coolest parts of the stories! Yes, villains can be based on problematic stereotypes, I won’t argue with you there. Before the recent surge in Disney movies that focus on inner struggles and family relationships (Frozen, Brave, Moana, etc), it seemed like every woman in the story who knew what she was doing was a Big Bad.

Disney Villains hand dyed yarn
Maleficent

The lovely gorgeous ingenues were the damsels in distress, rescued by princes and singing to birds. Pff. I’m no ingenue, I can’t dance, I have no interest in princes, and you best bet my waistline looks nothing like those corseted, unrealistic artistic imaginings.
Give up your family and everything you’ve ever known for a hunky prince you saw once and rescued from a shipwreck, who probably eats and enjoys lobster tails on the reg? Nah, I’d rather be the sea witch that everyone is terrified of. Ursula wasn’t always nice, but she was a hell of a business woman, am I right?

Disney Villains hand dyed yarn
Cruella

I’m all about the twisted fairy tales and reimaginings of old stories. I was obsessed with Ella Enchanted (the book, I’m too old to have seen the movie as a little one) from an early age, and I have a guilty habit of watching Once Upon a Time, even though it’s ridiculously cheesy and occasionally terrible (but Regina’s jackets are everything I want in business casual).

Disney Villains hand dyed yarn
Dr. Facilier

A friend suggested I use the princesses as a theme. Anna, Elsa, Ariel, the lot: but then I thought….nahhhhhh. This theme is all about the VILLAINS. These are some of my favourite villains: Maleficent (giant terrifying dragon), Ursula (shrewd businesswoman), Cruella (misguided fashionista), and Dr. Facilier (who has the BEST villain song ever). These yarns are 100g/skein of linen/silk/merino wool, thick and thin lace weight yarn. £15 each in the Etsy shop.

When crafting doesn't feel like therapy

Stealing from a small business

We’ve all been there before: a difficult project gets frustrating, life gets in the way, or brain bats move in and set up shop. Whatever the reason, it can feel crushing when your go-to self care no longer helps.
As some of you know, I’m planning a book for later this year. I’m self-publishing, so deadlines are self-imposed, but with life taking some turns at high speeds, I’m already falling behind. I suffered a mysterious wrist injury which limits my knitting and crochet time, which in turn means I’m not where I wanted to be.
It turns into a cycle:I feel guilty that I’m not completing projects fast enough –> I want to avoid working on the projects to try and avoid the guilt –> the projects take longer to complete as a result.
Logically I know that this cycle is unsustainable, but emotionally I’ve got my fingers in my ears, yelling, “LA LA LA, I CAN’T HEEEAAAAR YOOOOUUU!”
Crafting as therapy
I know not every crafter has a book planned, or dye yarns to sell, or shows to prepare for, or a million other things to think about, but we all have these feelings sometimes. Sometimes it’s a frustrating pattern, sometimes it’s the unending exhaustion that comes with a busy family, and sometimes it’s depression or anxiety. Sometimes it’s all of those things at once!

How to fix it

This week I’m moderating over on the @CraftAsTherapy feed, with the theme of kindness. I don’t just mean kindness to others, I mean to yourselves too! After all, we’ll run out of steam if we are kind to others but never spend time to recharge and be kind to yourself. If crafting isn’t feeling therapeutic, do something else, even if you have a deadline. Take a night off, allow yourself to watch the new season of Grace and Frankie or play video games and eat junk food.
I know it’s hard – I find it incredibly difficult to not be working on something. If I’m sitting, I’m knitting – or crocheting – or planning projects – or packing up orders, or ordering new undyed stock, or researching new ideas and plans, or a million other things. I know I’m not unique there – so many of us are the same. I challenge you this week to take at least one hour just for yourself. Do something that makes you happy, whether it’s the aforementioned hedonism, planting new seedlings, reading a book, or laying in the dark listening to a symphony. Just 60 minutes: that’s not even 1% of your week. Don’t you deserve some time for recharging (yes you do)?
Crafting as therapy
If you want to know what I’ll be doing to recharge and give myself some self-care therapy this week, I’ll be digging into a new book and sitting on a park bench with a big bag of jellybeans. After all, self-care definitely allows for junk food multi-tasking. emoji unicode: 1f609
If you want to hang out with me on Instagram this week, head on over to the @Craftastherapy account and post your pics with #craftastherapy_kindness, and they might just get featured!
Follow GamerCrafting on Facebook for undyed yarn news (and sometimes discounts!), patterns, geeky fanflailing and fun.

Why are my favorite Etsy sellers raising their prices?

Etsy sellers raising prices? Here's why.

Small business enthusiasts and indie maker supporters have noticed that some of their favorite Etsy sellers are raising their prices. Here’s why.
Here in the United Kingdom, things have changed since June 2016. Once the Brexit vote happened, the value of the pound has been fluctuating up to and around about 20%. For small businesses and indie makers, this can make a huge difference.

Here’s the thing: indie makers aren’t “greedy.”

I’ve seen some arguments flying around the internet that we’re using the Brexit vote as an excuse to fleece our customers and make a bigger profit. That’s not correct. Let’s do some (very simple) math to look at what’s happening.
Let’s say that an indie maker gets their raw material for their product for £10, imported from somewhere else. Let’s also admit that most things have to be imported, because they aren’t produced here or there isn’t enough produced here to fill an entire indie market (for the record, this is also true for yarn. There’s not enough “British wool” to support every knitter and crocheter who lives here).
This indie maker retails their product for £20. Included in this cost is the raw material, their time, skill, expertise, and any sales, discounts, or shipping costs (like packaging, trips to the post office, and so on).
Suddenly, their raw material is 20% more expensive, and thus costs £12 instead of £10.
Suddenly, their postal costs go up incrementally, let’s say by £1 per sale.
The indie maker was already not making much, and now are probably not even making ends meet. If they don’t raise prices to reflect the market, then they will go out of business and stop making the thing you love. There will be no more things to love, because they can’t afford to make them.

Actual depiction of how much indie makers make on a sale

We’re doing this because we love it, not because we’re making bank.

I don’t know anyone in the indie maker industry who is sleeping on a pile of money at night, if you catch my drift. We create because we feel called to it, we love the entire process of being an indie maker, from the creation to meeting the people who love our creations enough to buy them. We get a surge of glee every time someone tags us on social media to say they love the thing we made. It’s why we work incredibly hard to make it happen!
If you haven’t figured it out yet, prices in my Etsy shop have changed slightly. They haven’t even increased the full amount of my back end cost increases yet, but they will eventually have to rise to meet that or continuing to dye yarn and make things won’t be a viable career choice anymore.
Shipping costs have changed slightly: for UK customers it’s 10p more as the courier service raised their prices. For international customers, additional items will incur additional charges as I was actually losing money on some sales due to shipping costs. I never charge more than it costs to ship things, in fact I’ve charged far less in the past.
ANYWAY. A blog overhaul is in the cards in the near future to freshen things up around here and move to a new platform that allows for more flexibility. Follow GamerCrafting on Facebook for patterns, yarn discounts, and FUN!
Looking for the Etsy shop? It’s here. (And there’s new DISNEY VILLAIN themed shades available!)
